"Enjoy the Skin You're In" social media campaign

Renfrew County and District Health Unit - in collaboration with Cancer Care Ontario, Canadian Cancer Society, Ottawa Public Health, Eastern Ontario Health Unit, and Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit - has launched a social media campaign that encourages youth to feel good about the natural colour of their skin.

Enjoy the Skin You're In aims to raise awareness about the risks of using indoor tanning equipment  such as:

  • premature wrinkling
  • melanoma skin cancer
  • eye damage such as eye cataracts and eye cancer.

Indoor tanning is increasing in popularity among young adults. Melanoma is the fourth leading cause of cancer in this age group, and is the most deadly form of skin cancer. Indoor tanning before age 35 increases the risk of melanoma skin cancer by 75 percent.

Enjoy the Skin You're In is using social media in the following ways:

  • A Facebook page serves as a portal to information about indoor tanning and health.
  • A social media application, Indoor Tan Me, allows users to see what they may look like after over-exposure to tanning beds. Photographs can be uploaded from a computer or Facebook profile and shared with others.
  • Three videos in both English and French on the Enjoy the Skin You're In YouTube channel drive compelling messages about the negative effects of indoor tanning.
