Prenatal classes, taught by Public Health Nurses, are offered regularly throughout the year in the following areas:  Arnprior, Barry's Bay, Pembroke, Renfrew and Petawawa.

Classes are either :

  • 2-hour classes once a week for 7 weeks, or

  • 2 full-day classes (9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) on weekends.

A resource book called Healthy Beginnings and other useful handouts are provided to expectant mothers and their partners/support person. 

We recommend that you attend classes as early as possible in your pregnancy.

Topics covered during the classes include:

  • Fetal development
  • Nutrition
  • Tobacco, drugs and alcohol
  • Medical care and tests
  • Premature labour
  • Lifestyle choices for a healthy pregnancy
  • Healthy sexuality
  • Stages of labour
  • Comfort measures for labour and delivery
  • Breastfeeding
  • Involved fathers
  • Postpartum care and adjustment
  • Postpartum mood disorders
  • Family planning
  • Newborn care
  • Infant safety

Relaxation techniques, comfort measures, and breathing for labour and delivery are taught and practiced during these classes.

A tour of the maternal-child unit is organized with the local hospital.
