As part of the Safe
Water program, here are some of the Health Unit's services aimed
at reducing the incidence of
water-borne illness in the population:
1.
Bacteriological Water Testing Service - The Heath Unit provides
the general public with private citizen water test kits at no charge.
Sample bottles may be picked up and dropped off at any Renfrew County
and District Health Unit Office. Water samples are couriered to
the Public Health Laboratory in Ottawa and the results are mailed back
to the submitter in approximately one week's time.
2.
Private Water Supply Consultation - The Health Unit will interpret
the results of water samples taken by private citizens.
Counselling is provided on potential health effects from contaminated
water consumption and any possible remedial measures that may be
implemented.
3.
Communal/Municipal Water Supply Surveillance - The Health Unit
receives results of adverse drinking water samples taken by municipal
officials and ensures appropriate corrective measures have been taken
maintain a safe public water supply.
4.
Beach Monitoring - The Health Unit regularly tests the
bacteriological water quality at public bathing beaches during
the summer months in order to reduce the potential risk of water-borne
illness. A warning is posted on the Health Unit website for
those public beaches that show high levels of bacteria.
5.
Rural Surveillance of Various Other Public Water Supplies - The
Health Unit also routinely monitors water quality in schools, tent and
trailer parks, and eating establishments that are not serviced by a
municipality to ensure water potability.
Contact Environmental Health Section of the Renfrew County and
District Health Unit at 735-8654 to answer any questions or concerns
