Health Unit services to promote physical
activity include:
1.
Promotion of walking and cycling - the Health Unit supports
the development of walking and cycling routes, route guides and
special walking and cycling events. An annual gathering of
people interested in walking and promoting walking is hosted by the
Health Unit every spring. The Walk Your Way newsletter, including a
calendar of events, is produced and distributed to 500 individuals and
community organizations annually.
2.
Exercise programs for seniors - staff help to initiate and
provide resources to interested groups in seniors' residences.
3.
Event Organizing - together with our community partners, we
work to organize events such as Summer Active.
4.
Consumer Advice - call the Health Info Line (613) 735-8666 or
1-800-267-1097 for advice about optimal physical activity levels for
various age groups, special events and other topics. Also, check out the
Physical Activity fact sheets, pamphlets and recommended links in the Health
Info section of this website.
5.
Workshops, displays and presentations - covering the latest
physical activity info and tips. Offered to staff of day care
facilities, seniors' organizations, health and social service
organizations, recreation departments and to the general public. For
example, the "Workout with Ticker" workshop trains
leaders and daycares and home daycare operators to encourage physical
activity in preschoolers.
8.
Media Promotions - Physical activity is promoted on a
regular basis through the Health Unit's newspaper column "Health
for All", media interviews, feature articles and campaigns
such as Summer Active.
