Injury Prevention services
offered by the Health Unit include:
1.
Consumer Information - call the Health Info Line (613) 735-8666 or
1-800-267-1097 for information about falls prevention, road safety,
playground safety, car seat safety, drug and alcohol abuse prevention
etc.
2.
Community Events, Workshops and Programs (in collaboration with
community partners)- eg. Host Liability, Bicycle Safety Rodeos, Car
Seat Safety Clinics, Creating Safer Bars workshops, OPP Simulation
Vehicle, OPP Lookout, Last Drink, Safe Boating, Safe Snowmobiling etc.
3.
School initiatives - Party Smart, drama such as Motivational
Media, fatal vision goggles, ACTION Program, teacher consultation and
resource materials (see services for teachers),
parent information, county-wide OSAID (Ontario Students Against
Impaired Driving) workshops
4.
Displays, pamphlets, other resource materials- eg. Host
Liability Awareness, Car Seat Safety, Stay Safe at Work, Low-risk
Drinking Guidelines. Available for use in worksites and at community
events.
5.
Policy Development / Support - assist municipalities,
licensed establishments etc. to develop and maintain and update
municipal or house alcohol policies. A new initiative is the Family
Alcohol and Drug Use Policy brochure which has been developed by
Health Unit staff and community partners. Families can use it to
develop their own family policies regarding drug and alcohol
use.
6.
Coalition support - The health unit helped to initiate and
continues to provide support to the following coalitions aimed at
injury prevention: Renfrew County Substance Abuse Coalition, FOCUS
Community Project, Falls Prevention Coalition, Fetal Alcohol
Syndrome/Effects Committee, Renfrew County Car Seat Safety Coalition.
7.
Media campaigns - Injury prevention topics are covered on a
regular basis through a variety of channels including the Health Unit's newspaper column
"Health
for All", media interviews, feature articles and campaigns
such as Drug Awareness Week, Clean Out Medicine Campaign, OPP Lookout.
