Chronic
Disease Prevention
Healthy eating, food security, healthy weights, tobacco-free
living, regular physical activity, and sun safety are promoted
through education, skill development, policy development and community
partnerships such as the Healthy Living Partnership. The
goal is to reduce mortality from heart disease, cancer and other
chronic diseases.
Early
Detection of Cancer
Networking and education are aimed at increasing recruitment
to breast and cervical cancer screening programs.
Injury
Prevention and Substance abuse Prevention
Road safety, low-risk drinking, fall-prevention, and substance
abuse prevention are promoted through education, skill-development,
policy development and community partnerships such as the FOCUS
Community Project. The goal is to reduce injury and death
caused by crashes, alcohol and other substances, and falls in
the elderly.
Reproductive
Health
Education and policy
development aimed at supporting healthy pregnancy. Promotes healthy
behaviours before and during pregnancy. Prenatal classes for expectant
parents are offered in a variety of locations.
Child
Health
Promotes healthy child
development by encouraging positive parenting practices and supporting
healthy environments for children. Special support for families
whose children are most at risk for developing problems as well
as general support for all families are provided through the Healthy
Babies, Healthy Children Program. Preventive dental services are
also provided. Dental treatment for children in need is provided
through the CINOT Program.
Sexually
Transmitted Diseases including HIV/AIDS
Aims to reduce the
incidence of sexually transmitted diseases through clinical services,
counselling, case management, referral, consultation, education
and provision of vaccine, drugs and condoms.
Sexual
Health
Aims to promote healthy
sexuality through education of students, provision of information
to parents, inservice education and clinical services. Clinical
services include health assessment, counselling and provision
of contraceptives.
Control
of Infectious Diseases
Aims to reduce the
incidence of infectious diseases through surveillance, 24-hour
on-call availability, outbreak response, contact identification
and management for reportable diseases. Includes provision of
travel health advice.
Infection
Control
Aims to reduce the
transmission of infectious diseases. Staff work with hospitals,
nursing homes, homes for the aged, day nurseries and in other
community settings to ensure infection control programs are in
place where required and that infection prevention practices are
followed.
Tuberculosis
Control
Aims to reduce the
incidence of tuberculosis through education, case management,
provision of drugs, monitoring and surveillance.
Vaccine
Preventable Diseases
Aims to reduce the
incidence of vaccine preventable diseases. Staff ensure access
to immunization for provincially-funded vaccines and maintain
immunization records for all children in licenced child care and
schools. School entry may be deferred in cases where immunization
records are not up to date. Immunization clinics are provided
in a variety of locations. Staff also promote immunization through
education and policy development and ensure that physicians practicing
within the health unit have access to provincially-funded vaccines.
Free flu shots for all residents is a current priority.
